Hello from Tut Zhu, Your Designer
After honing my craft at the Royal College of Art and leading projects for BDP, Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio and Heatherwick Studio, I’ve stitched together a practice that moves easily from sushi bars in London to whisky lounges in Atlanta, from pop-up stores in Moscow to public welcome spaces closer to home.
Whatever the brief, I treat interiors like living storyboards: each material, join, and line of sight works together the way instruments do in an orchestra — distinct voices forming a single, memorable score. My goal is to translate your personality into spaces that feel intuitive on day one and still delight on day one thousand. I’m excited to collaborate, question assumptions, and turn constraints into catalysts for remarkable places.
Experiences – in a nutshell
Senior Interior Designer, Heatherwick Studio (London) — 2023
I turn Heatherwick’s sculptural ideas into interiors you can actually touch and enjoy—think timber-ribbed market halls, pocket-park cafés and visitor centres that feel like a hug. Recent favourite: a 12 000 m² mixed-use hub where reclaimed brick meets parametric brass detailing.
Senior Interior Designer, Tom Dixon ∕ Design Research Studio — 2021 → 2023
Two years of fearless colour and texture. I led Atlanta’s mood-lit UMI Sushi Bar and a winter-bright pop-up store in Moscow, guiding every step from the first sketch to the last bulb—and even brought VR walk-throughs so clients could “visit” before we built.
Interior Designer → Senior Interior Designer, BDP (Building Design Partnership) — 2014 → 2021
Cut my teeth on big, multi-site briefs—PwC offices across the UK, retail revamps and health-care roll-outs—balancing bold ideas with tight budgets and tighter timelines.
External Mentor, RCA & Birmingham Institute of Art + Design — 2015 → today
Fridays are for giving back: I coach MA students on turning research into real-world spaces and run workshops that mash interior design with engineering and data science. Keeps my curiosity sharp and my sketchbook lively.
